Rethinking Literacy Teaching:One Teacher's Explorations in a Rural Malaysian School

Dr. Saratha Sithamparam, Dr Moses Samuel.

With the increasing use of multimedia, multimodal texts, the literacy environments of communities are being reshaped. These new text forms, the presence of new technologies and the global spread of English have raised questions about what it means to prepare learners for the literacy demands of twenty-first century Malaysia. This paper discusses how a teacher responds to the changing literacy ecology to restrategise her approaches to teaching English.

The teacher, a graduate student on a masters course, taught English in a rural community. Her initial teacher training had focused on techniques for classroom practice so that grammar, vocabulary and the four skills of language (listening, speaking, reading and writing) were highlighted. Graduate school, on the other hand, challenged her to move beyond the ‘how-to’ of teaching to consider underpinning theories, socio-cultural contexts and the need to empower learners to navigate their worlds. In re-examining the conceptual bases of her teaching, the teacher explored new ways of teaching including using art in teaching literature to low English proficiency students which we discuss in this paper.
