The Integration of Health Promotion Within School Curricula- The Time Has Come

Justine Fierman MSN, CRNP, CDE.

As countries move from a developing country to a developed country, health issues change from that of acute illnesses resulting in mortality to chronic illnesses resulting in mortality. We see this most dramatically with regards to increasing rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes on a global level. Health promotion across the lifespan is key to the prevention of chronic illnesses and improvement of the health status of a community.

Culture and indocrination into health promotion practices begins during childhood. While we teach the lifeskills of language, mathematics, and sciences, we are leaving out one of the most crucial pieces to our survival as a population- teaching health promoting skills.

Health promotion can easily be implemented throughout curriculum worldwide. With the paradigm of health care moving from that of a focus on illness to one which is aimed at health promotion across the lifespan, now is the time to begin to implement health promotion education worldwide.

This presentation will illustrate the need which currently exists for implementation of health promotion education, and ideas for implementation within curriculum .
