The Construction of Identity : The Influence of Picture Books and Story Telling: An Examination of the Influence of Oral and Written Texts on the Development of Identity
This study looks at adult and child subjects and how influential oral, visual and written texts have been in developing identity. It looks at the work of New Zealand authors and how they position themselves in terms of national identity. It examines some indigenous literature in English and in bi-lingual versions, works in Pasifika languages and translations and works in English. Oral story telling data is gathered through interviews.

Barbara Matthews works in Teacher Education teaching in the Bachelor of Education and Master of Education programmes. Her interests lie in the area of Applied Linguistics. She has held senior positions in Elementary Schools in New Zealand. She has taught in Australia, Japan and Vietnam. She has taught English both as a subsequent language and as a foreign language.
