Parents in School: Partnership in Enhancing Children's Language Learning

Dr Wai Yee Margaret Lee, Dr Wai Man Kwong.

Families in Hong Kong are increasingly diversified in form, structure, pattern, and ethnicity. As these “new families” become increasingly visible, there is a growing concern within the early childhood education sector to empower parents from these families to support the education of their young children. This colloquium/paper presentation reports three case studies of school-based initiatives to engage parents in co-curricular activities to support children’s language learning. As they became aware of learner’s experience and the diversity of children’s approaches to language learning, they began to understand how children learn, how adults teach to help children learn, and how school-home collaboration could support children’s learning and development.
