MyRead: Strategies for Teaching Reading in the Middle Years
Janette Vervoorn, Rita van Haren.
Through this workshop participants will explore some of the underpinning principles of the online MyRead resource. These include non-deficit apporaches to underperforming students in the middle years (ages 9-15) and how the Four Resources model (Luke and Freebody, 1990) is an important framework for teachers of reading. This framework supports the teaching of reading throughout the stages of schooling as students access more complex and challenging texts in all learning areas.
MyRead acknowledges the diversity of students, the value of monitoring and assessment to inform teaching and teacher professionalism. Participants will be able to find out about a range of practical strategies developed by educators from across Australia and USA.
This resource has been workshopped successfully in all states of Australia through the networks of the Austalian Literacy Educators Association and the Australian Association for the Teaching of English. It was funded by the Australian Government and is freely available on the internet at www.myread.org. MyRead won the Secondary Technology Showcase section of the 2003 Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing.
