Understanding Syntax: Analyze Aloud Protocols of Pre-Service Teachers

The study based on the protocols of preservice teachers (recordings of their thought processes as they do syntactic analysis) aims at discovering the explicit, successful strategies these students use as they move from an unconscious understanding of syntax to conscious analysis of language. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations are made regarding the teaching of grammar so that students can build on their implicit understanding of language and their procedural memory in order to engage successfully in analysis of more complex constructions.
