The Internet Colleague Finder Database (ICFDb)
Dr Peter Burkholder.
This workshop is designed to introduce attendees to the Internet Colleague Finder Database (ICFDb), a Web-based connection point for scholars who want their students to collaborate directly with other students across the country or around the world. Attendees will receive an overview of the resource, and then will be invited to register themselves as willing collaborators for teaching projects, and to search the database for other scholars with compatible teaching goals. The project is supported by the U of Wisconsin System under the Plan 2008 Diversity Program, and has been officially endorsed by the World History Association.
The ICFDb is predicated on the following principles:
* that students' knowledge about distant places and peoples is greatly enhanced through direct communication with the peoples living in those places;
* that appropriate use of technology can be a great asset to teaching and learning;
* that a systematic resource such as this is easier and more efficient for establishing cooperative teaching projects than informal networking; and
* that instructors' collaboration with their peers will challenge them to become better teachers.
