Glimpses of Critical Literacy: Urban Adolescents and Preservice Teachers

Kate Tindle, Dr Juliana Taymans, Rachel Lander.

The Urban Initiative (UI) is a Professional Development School (PDS) partnership between The George Washington University’s Department of Teacher Preparation and Special Education and Cardozo High School, a high poverty school in the District of Columbia. We have enjoyed a PDS structure for six years. When our preservice teachers graduate they have earned a Master’s degree and can gain licensure in both a content area (English, English as a Second Language, Math, Science, or Social Studies) and Transition Special Education (students with learning disabilities). Ninety-five percent of our graduates are still teaching with over ninety percent teaching in District of Columbia secondary schools. The UI has instituted a literacy course for ninth grade students, which is team-taught by graduate preservice teachers who are mentored and supervised by a literacy coordinator. During the 2003-2004 school year we are piloting a completely revised literacy course, which has been strongly influenced by the literature on critical literacy. Our research investigated the types of supports that facilitate preservice teachers engaging adolescents in critical literacy conversations. Our results are reported based on information from three informant groups: the preservice teachers, UI project staff, and ninth grade students.
